“If you are exploring the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk, visiting the Historic Stranahan House Museum is an absolute must. Situated proudly on the banks of the New River, it sits just east of the main cluster of pioneer homes. Whether you approach by strolling down the paved promenade and crossing the railroad tracks or arrive directly from the surrounding downtown streets, the sheer beauty of this property simply demands to be seen in person. Seeing this beautifully preserved 1901 wood-frame home standing in the shadow of towering glass high-rises is an incredible sight. It is a precious piece of history tucked right into the heart of a bustling modern city. Walking past the classic wrap-around verandas gave me such a deep appreciation for the early trading post days. The experience was made even better by the people keeping its story alive. We had the pleasure of speaking directly with a wonderful volunteer who shared an absolute wealth of knowledge with us. He detailed the fascinating background of the house and the incredible history of the surrounding area. Places like this are incredibly worth preserving. Whether you are deeply interested in pioneer history or simply enjoying a waterfront stroll, this is a beautiful stop that perfectly anchors the city to its roots. A true architectural gem hiding in plain sight.”
“We loved the history of all things in this house. The selfguided tour was perfect to go at our own pace.”
“When it comes to South Florida, the history can be a bit more hidden. Between catastrophic hurricanes, housing market booms and busts, “old” buildings here are relatively new compared to other parts of the US or world. Ms. Jane was the curator onsite today and she greeted us and set us up with our touring “wands,” preprogrammed hand held audio devices that played the recorded material for each area or room of the house. From the foyer and office, to the parlor, dining room and kitchen downstairs, the bedrooms, bathrooms upstairs, the history of the early 20th century home was on display with antiques and period items and clothing, as well as the personal effects of Frank and Ivey Stranahan. One of my favorite parts was the upstairs wraparound porch. While there’s no touching in the house, here you were invited to sit in a white wicker chair and just watch the comings and goings along the New River’s water traffic. Yachts, water taxis, ferries, and paddle wheel steam boats touring all pass by while you take in the view. The tour was about 45 minutes long, though self-paced. Ms. Jane was well versed in the history of the home and other lore of the home. Well worth the visit to an oft-forgotten part of Florida history!”
